Multi Generational Early Literacy Committee:
MELC is a group of volunteers, partners with expertise in education, marketing and early childhood development focused on creating a culture shift among young people. The idea is to move Northeast Floridians away from negative stereotypes of older adults through multigenerational strategies such as providing access to children's stories that counter negative stereotypes by sharing the life experiences of older adults. MELC has broken new ground in northeast Florida by successfully publishing over the last year two high-quality children's picture books. Funded by Bank of America, these two books, Peter and the Silent Siren and The Little Red Envelopes, have been distributed to hospitals, libaries, pediatrician's offices, public schools and child-care centers. Grant Announcement:
The purpose of this MELC Grant is to expand multigenerational connection opportunities to more schools and students in Northeast Florida. Our hope is that by investing into a select group of teachers and students, we will encourage greater multigenerational connections and produce high quality short stories that could be turned into a children's picture book. We invite you to consider applying
for a $1,000 grant that can be used to initiate and manage a similar interview multigenerational process in your school. The $1,000 competitive grant will be considered as both an award ($750) for a teacher that runs the multigenerational interview process and a helpful source ($250) of funds for supplies. The deadline for applying for these funds is
September 30th. Seven awards total will be granted. Award recipients will be notified by mail
October 16th. We understand that teachers have lots of demands on
their time; so the application has been designed as a user-friendly document. If you need assistance with this application, please do not hesitate to contact Mark LeMaire at 390-3234 or email:
markl@uwnefl.org. The project will begin
November 2006 with an orientation/training for all award recipients at the United Way of NE Florida office at 1301 Riverplace Blvd., Suite 400, Jacksonville, FL 32207.
