Updates:
Falls Prevention Project Update
We are happy to report that we have already exceeded one of our goals for falls prevention. We were to assess 100 community dwelling seniors during year one. We have already conducted 5 community events and have assessed 136 seniors. Out of these 51% reported a fear of falling. After the assessments, which include education, assessment by a physical therapist and an exercise component, 87% reported a reduction in their fear. For more information on this program, please contact
Lale Gerger at 390-3224.
Recruit of 2nd Elder Care Advocate
We are in the process of interviewing some very promising candidates for the second Elder Care Advocate position, and expect to introduce this person very soon. The second Elder Care Advocate will join Amy Surber in providing much needed transitional services and information to seniors at Baptist and Shands Hospitals, allowing for full time coverage in both health systems.
Civic Engagement with Marc Freedman
On May 7 United Way was privileged to host Marc Freedman, the nationally renowned CEO and Founder of Civic Ventures. He has received national recognition as a social innovator on issues relating to the aging population in America. As a leading expert on the changing face of today’s workforce, he has authored books such as Encore: Finding Work That Matters in the Second Half of Life and Prime Time: How Baby Boomers Will Revolutionize Retirement and Transform America. Mr. Freedman was able to present to four groups that day despite a hoarse voice, and the turnout was fantastic. We thank Mr. Freedman and everyone who attended.
Michael Korn Honored
On April 29th Michael Korn was honored at the annual OneJax Humanitarian Awards dinner for his many years of community service. Mr. Korn, who heads the Life: Act 2 Partnership Council and, in his words, “practices law in his spare time,” was given the Silver Medallion Award. Our congratulations go out to Mr. Korn.
