Investing in pre-school children is not only a good thing to do; it is also good for the community. Every $1 we spend to help children from birth to five years grow, develop and learn returns $17 in cost savings and tax revenue during their lifetime. United Way-sponsored programs improve access to pre-natal and infant care and to quality pre-school programs. The goal is to provide young children their best chance to be ready for school. Intervention When It Counts: HELPING STUDENTS ACHIEVE

When students achieve their potential, everyone in the community benefits. For children whose academic progress is complicated by abuse, hunger, homelessness and mental and behavioral problems, quick, targeted action can mean the difference between failure and long-term success. United Way sponsors programs that provide mentoring, counseling, case management, teen parenting support, after-school activities, tutoring, and enrichment activities to help children succeed in spite of obstacles. Support for Older Adults: SENIOR ENGAGEMENT AND INDEPENDENCE

In Northeast Florida, community services for the fastest-growing segment of our population are not keeping pace with demand. United Way takes a proactive stance to this critical need by funding programs that help frail seniors maintain their independence and delay costly out-of-home care.
