In case you haven't heard the statistics recently, Northeast Florida's senior population is expected to grow by 66 percent in the next fifteen years. This population boom will bring with it lots of exciting opportunities, but also challenges in being able to keep up with the increased demand for services. To stimulate awareness about and collaboration on preparing for these issues before they become critical, United Way proposed, and currently leads, the Northeast Florida Life: Act 2 Partnership Council. This council is comprised of public, private, and corporate funders of senior services.

David and Linda Stein and the First Class of Stein Fellows with their youth mentees at this year's matching ceremony.
|
United Way of Northeast Florida volunteers and staff were excited to learn that United Way of America (UWA) recently selected the Stein Fellowship as one of 33 best practices nationwide that is being showcased to local United Ways. The initiative is one of only three finalists to be highlighted at the national UWA Staff Leaders Conference in May. Thanks to the generous donation of $1 million by Tocqueville members David and Linda Stein, the Stein Fellowship is helping make long-term changes in the lives of at-risk youth.
The Stein Fellows are select young professionals with a passion for philanthropy and community leadership. They mentor students once a week for one year and attend educational forums on the United Way focus issue, Helping At-Risk Students Achieve. The Stein Fellows also enjoy a mentoring relationship with established community leaders who help guide their personal, professional, and philanthropic development. To apply to become a Stein Fellow, contact Joanna Edgell, the Atlantic Circle & Stein Fellowship Coordinator, at 390-4006 or joannae@uwnefl.org.

Born Learning is a parent engagement early literacy program. It is designed to provide parents and caregivers simple easy-to-do tips and tricks that can be done during everyday activities to promote early literacy and healthy development. Workshops are offered free of charge thanks to funding from the City of Jacksonville RALLY JAX program and the Early Learning Coalition of Duval.
Scheduling a Born Learning workshop is a simple four step process. There are three workshops to choose from: Playing the Games, Learning on the Go, and Everyday Activities for Dads. All workshop participants receive a Born learning toolkit. Workshops are conducted by Melodie Dove, Born Learning Trainer and WILL (Women In Local Leadership) volunteers who have been trained as facilitators. To date, United Way has conducted 103 workshops reaching a total of 884 parents.

Resource management volunteers learn about key health and human service research.
|
Resource management volunteers gathered for training Wednesday, March 14, in preparation for their task of reviewing programs receiving United Way Community Fund dollars. They learned about United Way's on-line application process and about our community's needs, as measured by community indicators tracked by JCCI in the Quality of Life report. During the next two months, nine volunteer teams numbering 110 volunteers will visit funded and proposed programs to talk with staff, volunteers and participants to ensure that Community Fund dollars are invested for impact. They will make certain that each program is operating successfully by reviewing the achievement of program goals and objectives. In addition, volunteer CPAs and accountants will study the agency's financial statements to ensure that United Way's dollars are being used appropriately. In May, each team will recommend funding levels to be reviewed for approval by the Board of Directors and Trustees during their joint meeting in June.
