Seventeen Success By 6 families gathered together at the Museum of Science and History to learn how community assets could be used to provide learning opportunities for their children. Success By 6 and MOSH staff put together a morning of fun & education for all ages. The children were invited to explore some of the museums exciting “Preschool” exhibits and were then given the opportunity to meet and touch some “very wild animals”. MOSH education staff spoke to the parents about effective ways to use the museum and made recommendations about specific exhibits. Lunch was served and families were invited to explore the rest of the museum together at their own pace. Families enjoyed the Planetarium & Science shows as well as seeing the many exciting exhibits. Seventeen families attended for a total of 75 individuals. Older siblings were delighted by the shows and exhibits and added an air of excitement to the gathering. Six adult volunteers from United Way’s Atlantic Circle helped to make the morning fun for the families by assisting families with registration, providing helping hands to make name tags and to carry lunch plates. Each family was provided with a disposable camera and photo album so that they could create lasting memories of the day. Success By 6 center directors offered to develop the pictures for the families. Parents were asked to take a moment during lunch to answer a few questions on a Parent Survey. The survey was designed to quickly assess the impact of the Family Day and to provide insight into how families felt about the Success By 6 program overall. Here are some of the comments made by parents when asked about how Success By 6 had helped them: "It’s always a good experience with the program. Today it provided valuable family time with the kids. I’m very pleased to be a part of the Success By 6 program." "Success By 6 has helped my family with the financial burden of daycare costs. I am able to put my 3-year old in an excellent learning center. THANK YOU." "The program has helped our family greatly by offering quality service and information. Also, the program helped evaluate my son in order to provide help for his behavior.”" "The program is great. It helps my son learn how to be successful in school." "Success By 6 has provided my son with an excellent school where I feel that he has advanced to a higher level of education beyond a normal 3-year old level. My son is doing things and learning things that kindergarteners are learning." "Success By 6 has given my family options and my son is receiving the best education in town."
