The RealSense Prosperity Campaign is making community inroads with a mobile tax
team that takes free tax preparation to local employers and community organizations.
This year the mobile tax team has already taken its free tax
preparation services to several organizations, including Baptist
Medical Center, the City of Jacksonville, Catholic Charities, Clay
County Utilities, Fifth Third Bank (utilizing the bank’s eBus or
electronic bus that was outfitted with computers), Hogan’s Creek
(a Jacksonville Housing Authority senior housing residence), and
Madison Manor (an apartment complex for people 45 and older).
The team also plans to host a tax site on the University of Phoenix
campus in conjunction with student appreciation week and will
make the service available to students and university staff.
“The mobile tax team is a unit that goes to locations and
prepares tax returns free of charge. I have a core of four to five volunteers that I work with
but I can recruit volunteers from the total body of RealSense volunteers when needed,”
said financial consultant Iris Jones, Mobile Tax Team Site Coordinator and volunteer
tax preparer. “We’ve reached 70 percent of our goal for tax returns and always offer help
for those with other needs such as financial classes or obtaining a credit report.”
Jones hopes to take the program a step further next year and set up mobile tax teams for
the employers in advance. “People are learning that this is an option for them. We’re trying
to come out with new, strategic target areas and we know that we definitely haven’t
scratched the surface yet for many populations who can benefit from this service.”
