Sherwood H. Smith’s commitment to philanthropy and our community was well-known throughout Northeast Florida. As executive director of the Jacksonville Community Chest and state director and commissioner of the Florida Department of Public Welfare, he demonstrated his desire to make a difference in countless ways. Our community’s confidence in United Way was shaped by his presence in our history.
The Sherwood H. Smith Children’s Champion Awards
Awards are in two categories:
: An individual who has demonstrated exemplary service in working directly with children and youth.
: A community advocate whose efforts have resulted in positive change in policies or conditions that impact the well-being of children and youth in Northeast Florida.
Nomination forms are available to United Way's community impact partners working to improve the lives of young people in our community. A selection committee will review the nominations and determine recipients for each category. The awards of $1,000 each will be presented at a United Way event later this year.
